Dear FNU preceptor,

We appreciate your participation in the education of future nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners. You are helping to shape the future of healthcare.

Many of you have had questions in the past about CMS charting requirements for CNMs and NPs that are working with students.  The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently updated the charting requirements in a way that directly impacts preceptor/student charting.  We want to make you aware as the changes will reduce the amount of charting when working with our students. We are pleased to share the most recent update on charting requirements:

“Finalized Policy, Payment, and Quality Provisions ... 2020”

Review and Verification of Medical Record Documentation

To reduce burden, we are finalizing broad modifications to the documentation policy so that physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs – nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse-midwives and certified registered nurse anesthetists) can review and verify (sign and date), rather than re-documenting, notes made in the medical record by other physicians, residents, medical, physician assistant, and APRN students, nurses, or other members of the medical team.” (CMS, 2019)

See the website below for additional information:

We are thankful for what you do and hope that this requirement revision will both improve your efficiency as a provider and enhance your experience as a preceptor. As always, we are available to you and open to your feedback regarding our students.

Sincerely,

FNU Clinical Directors
