Biography

From Navy Aviation Electrician’s Mate to mental health advocate, clinician, and educator, Dr. Allen’s career reflects a distinctive integration of service, technical expertise, and an enduring commitment to community well-being. As a dual-certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner, she brings more than 17 years of diverse clinical experience to her mission of expanding access to high-quality mental health care. Dr. Allen began her professional journey with 12 years of service in the United States Navy as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate. She later spent eight years as an aircraft electrician supporting major government contractors, including Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, as well as private aviation firms such as Gulfstream Aerospace. This extensive technical background continues to inform her disciplined, systems-oriented, and detail-driven approach to patient care. Motivated by personal family experiences with mental illness and inspired by her mother’s legacy, Dr. Allen transitioned into nursing following her aviation career. Her clinical experience spans a broad spectrum of care settings, including cardiac and respiratory care, medical-surgical units, step-down, intensive care, long-term care, and outpatient psychiatry. This breadth equips her with a comprehensive, continuum-based perspective on patient care. In 2020, driven by a commitment to expanding behavioral health access in underserved communities, Dr. Allen founded an outpatient mental health practice in a semi-rural region of Virginia. There, she delivers evidence-based, culturally responsive psychiatric care to individuals and families facing significant barriers to treatment. She also serves as a faculty member at Frontier Nursing University, where she teaches in both the didactic and clinical components of the PMHNP program, helping to prepare the next generation of psychiatric providers. In addition, she contributes to workforce development as a preceptor for aspiring psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners. A dedicated mentor, educator, and leader, Dr. Allen remains actively engaged in professional, academic, and community organizations, continuing to advance equitable access to mental health care and support the development of future clinicians.
