Biography

Elizabeth Birkey began her nursing career in high school by becoming certified as a nursing assistant. She received her associates degree in nursing in 2004 from Illinois Valley Community College. She worked as a registered nurse for seven years in the medical/surgical and OB departments of a rural hospital in Illinois. She furthered her studies and completed her bachelor's degree in nursing at Northern Illinois University in 2006. In 2007 she became an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. A few years later, in 2009, she went on to pursue her Masters of Science in Nursing at Frontier Nursing University and graduated with a specialty in Midwifery in 2011. She then went on to complete her Post-master’s Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2013 and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in 2019. In March, 2021 she completed her Doctorate in Nursing at Frontier Nursing University. She is certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board, American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is currently practicing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in central Illinois near where she resides. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, going for walks, reading non-fiction, and continuing her education.
