Biography

Dr. Jana Esden is a Family Nurse Practitioner who has been with the university since 2009. Dr. Esden is an Associate Professor and is the course coordinator FNP706, which is Primary Care III. Dr. Esden’s focus in teaching is to assist in graduating students who give evidence-based, empathetic, and sensitive care. Her research interests include lower respiratory conditions, adverse childhood experiences, and underserved populations. In 2012, Dr. Esden was awarded the National Conference for Nurse Practitioner’s Nurse Practitioner of the Year award for the creation of a political video relating to prescriptive authority for nurse practitioners in Florida. In 2013, a manuscript of her DNP project was published in the journal The Nurse Practitioner, and she was invited to speak at the National Conference for Nurse Practitioners. In 2014, she was invited to and began writing for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB). Since then, Dr. Esden has continued to publish and present on a regular basis. Dr. Esden is a member of the Editorial Board of The Nurse Practitioner journal and a member of the planning panel for the National Conference for Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Esden is deeply committed to FNU’s mission, and congruent with that mission, the majority of her time as an FNP has involved caring for underserved populations. Dr. Esden spent four years at a free clinic in Central Florida and 5 years working with homeless men and women in Northeast Wisconsin. Her area of expertise is adults with chronic illness. Dr. Jana Esden graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2003 with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. In 2006, she entered the Family Nurse Practitioner program at the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, now Frontier Nursing University, and graduated in 2008 with a Master’s of Science in Nursing. She graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2012, also from Frontier Nursing University.
