Nurse-midwifery practice in birth center setting. As part of the staff of Holy Family Services Birth Center, the certified nurse-midwife (CNM) provides antepartum, intrapartum postpartum, newborn and routine well women health care.

Qualifications
- Ability to function competently in all areas of nurse-midwifery practice
- Hold a current RN license in the state of Texas or that of a compact state
- Hold a current advanced practice registered nurse license in the state of Texas
- Hold current certifications in BLS and NRP
- Have the following immunizations: Flu, MMR, Tdap, hepatitis B, and a TB test.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages the care of and gives direct client services to families in all areas of maternity, newborn and women’s healthcare, according to the standards of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the American Association of Birth Centers and the policies, procedures and clinical practice guidelines of HFS.
Antepartum care:
- Manages the care of low-risk individuals who present at various points in the childbearing cycle
- Consults with the clinical team according to the established risk criteria regarding any client who develops symptoms of medical or obstetrical complications
- Manages the care of normal antepartum women, including teaching, counseling, and support.
- Takes a health history, performs and records the physical examination.
- Evaluate and review any findings with a client and their family.
- Functions under established clinical practice guidelines for specific medications and treatments for the antepartum.
- Participates in regular scheduled clinical meetings and drills.
- Participate in outreach events in the community.
- Teaches and/or assists with education classes when needed.
Intrapartum:
- Manages the care of women experiencing an essentially normal labor including teaching and support.
- Takes an admission history, reviews the antepartum record and performs a physical examination including the status of labor. Determines eligibility for out of hospital birth and/or nurse midwifery management.
- Performs the following procedures when indicated:
- Manages normal spontaneous birth
- Repairs lacerations
- Manages the third stage of labor
- Completes documentation of the labor and birth
Postpartum care:
- Manages the postpartum care of women, including assessment of emotional and physical status.
- Reviews with the client the postpartum status
- Performs postpartum home visits
Newborn care:
- Performs and records a complete assessment of the newborn.
- Delivers emergency care for the newborn including resuscitation if needed
- Provides care for the normal newborn for the first 28 days of life.
Well-woman health care:
- Provides routine well woman health care
- Evaluates and treats minor gynecological problems according to clinical practice guidelines. Consults or refers to physicians as indicated.
- Orders lab tests as indicated
- Counsels clients regarding health issues such as breast self-exam, cardiovascular risk health maintenance and care for specific problems
Duties include all the above, plus community education/service projects.
This work includes on-call hours for intrapartum, postpartum and home visits.
