QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate from approved and accredited Nurse Midwifery program
- Certified as a Nurse Midwife by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB)
- Active RN and APRN licenses in the state of birth center
- Meets continuing competency criteria of Illinois and AMCB
- Current NRP and BLS certifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn clients, as well as providing preventive care, reproductive care, and gynecological care. The CNM performs physical exams; collects and documents data; facilitates physiological labor, birth and emergency management; conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations; and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications.
- Participates in direct client care activities in rotation with other CNM(s)
- Adheres to the birth center model of care and philosophy of physiological birth, trauma-informed care, and informed consent
- Adheres to birth center eligibility criteria for clients throughout antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
- Provides comprehensive midwifery care and appropriate referrals
- Provides competent and respectful care to all families regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or disabilities
- Participates in once-monthly drills/ in-service
- Participates in professional and community awareness activities
- Supervises the orientation and functioning of birth assistants
- Responsible for delegated aspects of daily operation, including acting in absence of Director of Midwifery
- Participates in a quality assurance program
- All staff are responsible for the maintenance and care of the birth center which includes cleaning, sanitation, laundry, and equipment maintenance
