REGALIA

Regalia (gown-hood-cap) must be worn to participate in our in-person Commencement ceremonies. For on-time delivery, you should order at least six weeks before the event (additional time may be required for custom orders).

Jostens.com has served FNU students for many years and has an online store to help guide your regalia purchase. It is not required that FNU students purchase from Jostens.com. You must wear regalia to participate in person, but you may opt to purchase from any comparable vendor.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE YOUR MSN or DNP degree and will be eligible to have us recognize a Post Graduate Certificate (PGC) at commencement this year, you should plan to wear the regalia package of your most recently achieved degree level (master's or doctoral). You may wear a previously purchased set of regalia (gown-cap-hood), or you may purchase one now. You will line up for the processional with your PGC specialty cohort, but wear your hood when you cross the stage as your name is called instead of having it placed on you during the ceremony.

  3. Click on "My School Store" for a dropdown menu of the entire line of products queued with FNU specifications.
  4. To view standard (budget) regalia packages, click "Graduation Caps & Gowns."
  5. If you anticipate wearing regalia multiple times - such as those working in academia - you may wish to invest in one of the longer-lasting "Fine Quality Regalia" packages.

NOTE: Choose "Nursing" in the field that asks for "major/curriculum." This will get you to the apricot-colored velvet hood trim that FNU graduates wear. If purchasing elsewhere, please ensure your hood is black with royal blue and white satin lining and apricot velvet trim.

What IS "Custom Fine Quality" regalia?

Available only for the doctoral Fine Quality packages listed above, Custom FQ packages come with embroidered FNU-specific detailing on the front panels of the gown. 

ACADEMIC APPAREL AND TRADITIONS

GOWNS

The gown for the master's degree is black, without any additional decorative trim. It has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the sleeve base hanging loosely. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front has an arc cutaway. The gown for the doctoral degree is also black and has bell-shaped sleeves. The material may vary from light to heavy. Three bars of velvet trim (black or FNU blue) adorn the upper sleeves, and optional velvet trim facings may line the front gown opening. In all cases, the hood is black and must be the same material as the gown.

HOODS

Hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the university conferring the degree. The colors for Frontier Nursing University are blue and white. The length of the hood for the master's degree is three and one-half feet; for the doctor's degree, four feet. Only doctoral hoods shall have panels at the sides. The binding or edging of the hood is to be velvet or velveteen, three inches and five inches wide for the master's and doctor's degrees, respectively; the color should indicate the subject to which the degree pertains. The color associated with Nursing – the discipline for this university – is apricot. There can also be an additional satin chevron or lining in the university colors.*

*FNU's official blue shade is "Pantone #280" or "Hexidecimal #13377C" - for those not ordering through Jostens.

CAPS

The cap is black and can be worn indoors and out – it is made of cotton poplin, broadcloth, rayon, or silk to match the gown; velvet is appropriate for doctoral degrees only. Master's level graduates wear mortarboards (square caps). The master tassel is worn on the right until the degree is conferred. It is then moved to the left. Tams (6- or 8-sided caps) are worn by doctoral graduates. A long tassel is fastened to the midpoint of the top of the cap. The tassel should be black or university colors; doctoral graduates may also opt for a tassel of gold.
